Proceedings of the International Conference on Harbor, Maritime and Multimodal Logistics Modeling & Simulation, HMS 2009 ISBN 978-84-692-5416-5 146 ABSTRACT The Navigation System Simulation (NaSS) suite of tools has been developed by the Institute for Water Resources of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), as part of the Navigation Technologies Research Program. NaSS is composed of two primary applications, a Monte Carlo simulation model of vessel movements on an inland waterway system and a data processing and analysis tool for mining of historical data. The NaSS tools are used in concert for economic analyses of an inland waterway system. The NaSS suite was designed to answer potential questions of a waterway system under examination, for example; What is the overall system performance of a waterway network under different operating, demand load and reliability conditions?; How effective are alternative lockage polices at reducing delays and delay costs?; How does any single lock improvement project affect delays at other locks? This paper focuses on the Monte Carlo waterway simulation component called BasinSym.

Example of Positioning Intermodal Terminals on Inland Waterways
Positioning of intermodal terminals is of key importance since it affects the very investment into the terminal, ecological, physical issues and the costs of the operation of individual terminals. Detailed analysis has to be performed by decision-making regarding the siting of intermodal terminals. The work analyzes the relevant criteria necessary for the siting of intermodal terminals. The pro...

متن کاملDecentralized Fault-Tolerant Control of Inland Navigation Networks: a Challenge
Inland waterways are large-scale networks used principally for navigation. Even if the transport planning is an important issue, the water resource management is a crucial point. Indeed, navigation is not possible when there is too little or too much water inside the waterways. Hence, the water resource management of waterways has to be particularly efficient in a context of climate change and ...
متن کاملA model of navigation-induced currents in inland waterways and implications for juvenile fish displacement.
The likely extension of commercial inland navigation in the future could increase hazards directly impacting on the nurseries of freshwater fish, especially for smaller individuals with limited swimming abilities. One limitation of the evaluation of inland navigation on fish assemblages is the lack of suitable hydraulic models. This article presents a hydraulic model to assess the increase of n...
